The Architects

Through the years, we have performed extensive research to learn more about all our buildings, including both houses and their outbuildings. The result is that we now know much more about various modifications made and the architects who were involved.

For example, for a long time we did not know the architect who designed Charles Deere’s 1872 home, Overlook. Then one day, we came across a two-inch blurb in the Rock Island Argus from the early 1870s. It said that “Charly Deere” was building a new home, the architect was William LeBaron Jenney, and the builder was John Salisbury. That type of discovery always makes for a great day in the life of a historic site!

Although there are still mysteries to be solved, with continued preservation work, we hope to keep learning new information about the origins and residents of our remarkable buildings, which we will eagerly share with history enthusiasts who visit us both in person and on line.
