Classes may tour historic Butterworth Center and Deere-Wiman House. Tours will cover such topics as architectural changes, lifestyles and customs of the 19th century, and history of the Deere and Butterworth families. Tours are designed to be age appropriate.

John Deere: A Journey to the Past For 3rd or 4th grade students

Artifacts in the trunk teach students about life and customs during the later half of the 19th century. The program includes a trunk with artifacts and lesson plans for teachers. The class can visit Deere-Wiman House for a follow-up tour. The tour focuses on artifacts found in the home and how they give insight to lifestyles of the former residents. The free program is offered during the school year.

Portrait in the Attic For 5th grade students

The Portrait in the Attic program is modeled after living history plays but is unique as students are the actors and participate in the story. Prior to the field trip to the Butterworth Center & Deere-Wiman House, 5th grade students view the Portrait in the Attic CD-ROM which showcases the artwork and rooms in the play. Students are also given scripts to rehearse in class. During their visit to the historic homes, some students act while other students are spectators. The free program is offered during the school year.
