Family members that lived in the houses

The Deere-Wiman House, named Overlook by its first owners (the Charles Deere family), and Butterworth Center, named Hillcrest by its first residents (newly married Katherine and William Butterworth), were home to four generations of John Deere descendants.

Although John Deere never lived in either house, he would certainly have visited the Deere-Wiman House, built in 1872. By the time the Butterworths’ home was built in 1892, John had passed away in 1886.

During the late 1800s and early 1900s, many Deere family members played major roles in the success of the John Deere Company. Many also contributed greatly to the overall welfare and growth of the community where their manufacturing operations were located. Under The People tab, you will find a Family Tree showing how each generation of family members who lived in the Moline community related to patriarch John Deere.

Coming soon, look for a visual history of the separate journeys John and Demarius Deere took when they traveled west from Vermont to relocate in Grand Detour, Illinois.
