HISTORY PR0GRAMS
Historic home tours (all grades)

Classes can tour either historic Butterworth Center or Deere-Wiman House.  Tours will cover topics including architectural changes, lifestyles and customs of 19th century, and history of the Deere and Butterworth family.  Tours are presented so that they are appropriate for each grade level.

Artifacts Trunk: For 4th grade students
John Deere’s City: A Journey to the Past
Artifacts in the trunk teach students about life and customs during the later half of the 19th century.  The program includes a trunk and lesson plans that can be checked out by teachers, followed by a slide presentation to students at their school by a Butterworth Center & Deere-Wiman House staff member.  The class can visit Deere-Wiman House for a follow up tour.  The tour focuses on artifacts found in the home and how they give insight to lifestyles of the former residents. This free program is offered during the school year.

Portrait in the Attic
For 6th grade students
The Portrait in the Attic program is modeled after living history plays but is unique because students are the actors who inhabit the spaces, use the props, wear the costumes and participate in the story.  Before the field trip to the Butterworth Center & Deere-Wiman House, 6th grade students view the “Portrait in the Attic” CD-ROM which showcases the artwork and rooms in the play. Students are also given scripts so they can rehearse the play in class.  During their visit to the historic homes, some students act while other students are spectators.

Junior Historian Jamboree
For 4th-6th students
Each spring and fall, a Junior Historian Jamboree for fourth through sixth grade students attracts youngsters who are interested in learning about their community's past.

A Week in the 1800s
Summer Camp for ages 10-12
This week long camp program is held in mid-July, from 9 am to 3 pm. Through this fun and enriching camp program, children will learn about the lifestyles and resourcefulness of our pioneer ancestors and gain an appreciation for Quad City area history.

ART PROGRAMS
An Exhibition of Student Artwork
Art work from over 1,000 students from all thirteen elementary schools in the Moline School District was featured in an upcoming exhibit at Butterworth Center in the Spring.

 Brinton Art Competition
For District 40 middle and high school students
The Brinton Art Competition honors Mary Jane (William) Brinton, great-great granddaughter of John Deere, and a long-time supporter of the arts. Each art instructor from a Moline middle or high school is asked to select five pieces of artwork for each category. Categories are two-dimensional, three-dimensional, and photography. Two-dimensional artwork must be matted.

Cash prizes are awarded to best of class and honorable mention for each grade bracket.  The winning artwork is displayed during Blossoms at Butterworth in June.

MUSIC PROGRAMS

Music on the Lawn
For children and day care providers; also open to the public
Music on the Lawn offers childcare centers and childcare providers an educational and fun free music concert event.  Each year, two separate concerts are held in June and July.
