About the Workshop Leader: Dr. Nancy Frakes’ workshops are dynamic and action-packed. Her experience as a teacher on the elementary, secondary and university level, has given her the unique background necessary to bring educational theory down to the practical level that teachers need and want.
Description: In this hands-on workshop, teachers will learn about nature and animals that live on land or in the water along the Mississippi River. Learn more about ecology which deals with the relations between living things and their surroundings. Discover the animals’ ways of life, their young and their habitats. Learn new and different ways to enrich math, science, language arts, social studies and art by using lesson plans centered on these animals.
In addition, Brian Ellis, who portrays John James Audubon, will lead a session on “Bird is the Word: Journaling, Poetry, Non-Fiction Writing, and Ornithology”. He will use the art and writing of Audubon as the ideal model, teachers will learn classroom tested lesson plans for integrating the curriculum, teaching creative writing, history and science process skills.
Participants will also enjoy an 11:00 a.m. Saturday public performance by Brian and listen to the stories of Audubon’s travels as he painted every bird in North America. The Figge Art Museum has scheduled a full day of performances and activities on Saturday, February 9, 2008, open to the public. An exhibit of Audubon prints (from Charles Deere’s collection) will also be on display from February 2 to May 11, 2008 at the Figge.
