Moline
High School music department goes high tech with a new “music lab station”
thanks to matching grant from Butterworth Center & Deere-Wiman House
Creating
computer-composed music now a reality for Moline High School students
MOLINE,
Ill. (November 5, 2004) Butterworth Center & Deere-Wiman House has
awarded Moline High School a grant of $5,000 to create a master unit as
a foundation for a potential state of the art music lab.The
gift will be matched with available MolineHigh
School
funds.
“The use of technology in music is
an area that has been overlooked at Moline
because of lack of available funds. With this grant for the music lab,
we will now have the ability to see students work easily at composing their
own work and be able to enhance current projects in our curriculum,” stated
the MHS music department that is headed by Amber Dahlen (orchestra),
Ron May (Choir) and Steve Schwaegler (Band).
The “master” music lab unit will
consist of a mobile cart to hold all of the necessary elements that can
be moved from classroom to classroom, a digital keyboard for pitch entry,
a computer system with high memory, as music notation requires a great
deal of memory; quality speakers for audio playback, headphones for private
work, and digital sequencing equipment with CD burner.
“Without the lab, orchestra students
experiment through a very long and laborious process, but with the new
music lab they will now have the ability to arrange a song for orchestra,
assign parts, print out the notation, and even give the students direct
feedback of how it will sound. This will not only make the project
more creative but it will take far less time that now can be devoted to
other creative activities,” stated the MHS music department.
The one-time grant was created in
honor of George F. Neiley, who served in various capacities on the board,
including chairman, from the 1960s until his death a few years ago.The
grant was intended for a specific project or program at the high school
that would mesh with the mission of Butterworth Center & Deere-Wiman
House of furthering the arts as they relate to children's issues.
“This music lab grant enables a shift
from focusing on the production of music to the creation of music.
The music lab will not only allow choir, orchestra, and band students to
compose individual pieces, but will enable them to also score and arrange
complete productions for high school activities. This opens up one more
avenue in the realm of fine arts education, and provides a technical opportunity
for students that are inclined in that area.” said Deb Bracke, Scholarship
Committee member and Board member of Butterworth Center & Deere-Wiman
House.
<>The
first step in creating the music lab will be using a consultant to help
them create a music lab that will especially benefit MolineHigh
School
students with interests in music.
“The students who are aware of this
grant award are pumped up about the potential of what this lab can do.
We see this lab as having the potential to reach across the curriculum
in several ways. For example, a student who is writing a scene
for AP English or Creative Writing can now collaborate with a music student
to compose an underscore for a video presentation. This cross-curricular
type of study is an exciting concept to see happen,” stated the MHS music
department. >
How the music lab will be
used and benefits to students
The music lab would offer several
tonal “ear” training exercises, and immediate feedback and drills for students
who are interested in composing and arranging original music using notation
and sequencing.Practical benefits would be reaped
for students as well. For instance, a student whose instrument is being
repaired and cannot join rehearsal or the vocalist who has a cold and cannot
sing can be stationed at the music lab station for skill development and
feedback.
The music lab would also introduce
students to equipment that they will encounter when the enter college music
courses.
"We have several students each year
that graduate and continue their music studies at the college/university
level. Through the creation of this lab, these students will no longer
be intimidated by technology that is currently in place at the college
level,” stated the MHS music department.
The MolineHigh
School
music department intends the music lab to be an ongoing project and in
the future hopes to add stations once the master unit is designed and put
into service. This base/master unit would be the start
of a potentially large lab that could contain up to 25 additional stations
that could be linked to the master unit.
