Portrait
in the Attic
A sixth grade living-art-history
program |
|
Butterworth Center &
Deere-Wiman House is excited to offer this FREE sixth grade program to
teachers and students.
|
|
| The three-part program
is an introduction to the art collection of the historic Deere-Wiman House
& Butterworth Center in Moline. Through a multidisciplinary approach,
your class will learn about art history. This award-winning program
is modeled after living history plays, but is unique because students are
the actors who inhabit the spaces, use the props, wear the costumes and
participate in the story.
Part 1: Before the field
trip
Your journey through art
history begins with a CD-ROM that showcases the artwork and interior and
exterior of the homes. Used in your classroom, the CD-ROM will prepare
your class for a visit to the homes. Students are also given scripts
so they can rehearse the play in class. The CD and script will be
delivered to your school prior to the visit. Illinois state goals and learning
standards met by the program are included. |
Part 2: The field trip
Your class will participate
in a living history play lead by Butterworth Center & Deere-Wiman House
staff. Students will take on roles, that will lead them past both
historic homes’ art collection. |
|
|
The group will be introduced
to five types of paintings: 1) history, 2)portraiture, 3)genre, 4)landscape
and 5)still life. The students will also learn about different forms
of art. Costumes and props are provided.
Part 3: Writing component
After the play, the curator
instructs the students to create their own work of historical fiction about
an unknown woman in a portrait. Finally, the identity of the woman
is divulged by the curator, who explains how the portrait was found in
the attic of Deere-Wiman House.
